Increase in Prostate Cancer in Nigeria Linked to Higher Life Expectancy

Prostate cancer is increasing in Nigeria due to higher life expectancy, which means more men live to the age where prostate cancer is most common, and improved diagnostic capabilities, leading to more cases being detected. Other factors include lifestyle changes towards Western diets, limited public awareness, poor healthcare infrastructure for early detection and treatment, and possible genetic and environmental factors.

Yes, prostate cancer can be hereditary. While most prostate cancers are sporadic, meaning they occur by chance, a significant portion, estimated to be between 5-10%, is hereditary, linked to inherited gene mutations. These mutations can be passed down through families, increasing the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Dr Chinedu Ariah, Senior Oncologist, National Hospital, Abuja, said prostate cancer is age related but it happens on black men relatively earlier than that of whites. There are four stages of prostate cancer. The first two stages are treatable but in the last two stages, the ailment can be managed

“Prostate cancer grows slowly. It occurs earlier in blacks than whites. Early stages are curable but in later stages the patient is given palliative to manage the disease. Prostate cancers are two forms. There are the benign ones that are not cancerous and therefore not dangerous and there are the ones that are cancerous,” Dr Ariah said.

The symptoms of prostate cancer may not be easily detected but indications include frequent urination, difficulty in urinating and stooling, but if detected in the early states, it can easily be treated through many treatment options.
