Reasons Why Women Cheat in Nigeria

When it was reported that about 62 per cent of women cheat their husbands in Nigeria, even men were doubtful of that report and there was general assumption that the figures might have been exaggerated.

In the tradition of many tribes that make up Nigeria, a woman cheating is frowned at but some cultures frown deeply at it than others. There are some cultures where a woman who cheats is sacked from the marriage after ensuring she was disgraced. But some others are not that punitive.

There are casual factors that identified as the reasons why women cheat in Nigeria. The first is that some women marry the man that is ready to settle down and not whom they love. Sometimes they will be in their husbands’ house and still be sleeping with their former lovers. This is why there is increasing number of women who give their partners other men’s children, as increasing DNA tests have revealed.

Related to this is the situation where a girl who is not in love is persuaded by the man to marry him. Sometimes he will solicit the support of her parents and they will collectively beg the girl to marry him. Obviously, the girl is not in love but she will force herself to be in the marriage. She may start cheating any day she sees a man she loves.

Another factor is when a woman who married a man that is not well to do or cannot satisfy her material needs and she begins to seek for financial succour in another man whom she would offer her body and receive money in exchange.

The last factor is sexual satisfaction. A woman who could not be satisfied could cheat with another man that can satisfy her. These factors are common in Nigeria.

In 2018 Durex claimed from its investigation that about 62% of women in Nigeria cheat their husbands. In an interview conducted by Durex on married women in Nigeria about 62 per cent admitted that they cheated their husbands, at least twice.

This was how Nairaland of July 26, 2016 put it, “When it comes to infidelity it is widely believed that men are more likely to stray than their female counterparts, but according to a new video, there are numerous countries around the world where women prove to be the more unfaithful sex. The YouTube channel Dating Beyond Borders has analyzed surveys done by Durex, Match.com and TheRichest.com to determine which countries have the highest rates of infidelity among men and women. And out of the 36 countries surveyed by Durex, it was revealed that a whopping 62 per cent of Nigerian women were reported to have cheated, making them thought to be the most unfaithful wives in the world.”

Forbes on August 3, 2024 published five factors while women cheat their husbands.

  1. Their Relationship Is No Longer Fulfilling

Overall, women’s most frequently given excuse for their infidelity is being unhappy in their current relationship—with a whopping 64.66% of women in the study having endorsed this reasoning.

  1. Their Partner Seems Uninterested in Them

The second most common motivation for women’s infidelity—nominated by 22.41% of participants—is the feeling that their partner is no longer interested in them or invested in their relationship.

  1. They Want Revenge For A Cheating Partner

Intriguingly, 15.52% of women admitted that they cheated purely because they knew their partner was already cheating. One participant, when asked why she cheated, confessed that it was an act of retaliation: “I found an email of his where he was apparently looking for other women to date on Craigslist.”

  1. They’re Sexually Dissatisfied

The fourth most endorsed reason behind women’s infidelity, at 8.62%, was sexual dissatisfaction. Unsurprisingly, this is quite similar to the men in the study, with 9.42% of them citing the same reason.

  1. They’re Bored

One participant’s excuse for her infidelity perfectly sums up the fifth motivator: “I was overall just bored in the relationship.” This sentiment is echoed by 7.76% of women in the study who cited boredom as their motivation. And, in a similar vein, 5.17% of women attributed their infidelity to the need for novelty. It seems that when the routine of a relationship becomes monotonous, the allure of something new and exciting can be a powerful pull.

Another important factor, however, is when a wife begins to look down on her husbands because she thinks she is cowardly and lazy and she may not be proud doing anything with him again. “A woman who feels no pride in her husband may feel a lack of respect, which can be a precursor to cheating.”
